Learning and Teaching Policy
St Patrick's School is committed to a system of education which is true to the mission
of Jesus Christ, and which, at the same time, recognises and acknowledges the sacredness
and uniqueness of each individual, created in the image of God and carved in the palm of God's hand.
At St Patrick's School we will enable young people to:
- grow and develop as whole human beings
- live Christian, Gospel based values that maximize their talents to
achieve their personal best
- become responsible, contributing members of society
- play an active part in shaping a better world for all.
The staff have worked together to formulate the following principles of effective
learning / teaching. We are committed to helping children grow into adolescence who are:
Spiritual - They demonstrate familiarity with scripture and an understanding of the
teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. Pupils will have the opportunity to take
part in formal and spontaneous prayer, as well as:
- receive the Sacraments: Reconciliation (Year 2), First Communion (Year 3)
and Confirmation (Year 6)
- formal Religious Education lessons based on the Diocesan Curriculum
- attend Mass and Paraliturgies (short prayer services for special days
eg. Mother's Day)
- regular visits from the priests of our Sacred heart Parish.
At St Patrick's, Religious Education is central to our everyday life and so cannot be
isolated into just a subject, but is part of everything the School does. Thus, all pupils,
regardless of their religious background take part in all activities.
Inquirers, Thinkers - students need to question, analyse, investigate and search for
answers. They need to be able to think creatively and critically as well as use and apply
learning processes and information in many different contexts.
Reflective and Adaptable - students need to reflect on their thinking and learning
and work toward improvement. Ours is a world of change and so students need to be able to
work with change by being open minded, resourceful and flexible.
Knowledge - students need to understand significant ideas and concepts as well as
being literate and numerate. This knowledge is used to make connections between ideas.
Communicators - students need to receive, express and represent information in
multiple modes and forms, and make appropriate choices for a wide range of audiences.
Collaborative - students need to be able to work effectively with others in a
variety of a class and social settings. The development of teamwork and interpersonal
skills is essential.
Principled and Caring - Pupils need a well formed conscience based on Gospel values.
These include perseverance, courage, loyalty, honesty, a sense of justice and fairness,
respect for self and others and confidence. As well students need to show sensitivity
towards the needs and feelings of others, tolerate difference and be mindful of the effects
of their words and actions on others.
